In 1934 the German phamacist Karl Meyer and his colleague John Palmer, doctors of of the University of Columbia (New York) managed to isolate in the laboratory of ophtalmology of the university a substance until then stranger from the vitreous body of the eyes of the cows. They discovered that this substance contained two sugar macro-molecules, and that one of them was acid urónico. As a result of this they made the decision to give him to the name of hialurónico acid from the words hialoide " (vitreous) and urónico acid. The substance, that helped the eye to conserve its form, was extremely viscous, which made suspect to Meyes that could have some therapeutic use. Without embargo its extraction from the eyes of the cows was not feasible commercially. The hialurónico acid was used for the first time with commercial aims in 1942, when the Hungarian scientist Endre Balazs used the techniques of Meyer to synthesize the acid of the crests of the roosters, that nowadays continues being one of hialurónico acid sources the more beneficial. Interested in the compound it patented the first use of this acid: sucedáneo of the clear one of egg in pastry shop products. Balazs carried out the discoveries most of on hialurónico during last the fifty years, having awarded by its race in numerous occasions and their name to the prizes of the Society has even put him the International of Investigation. |
