Oral Surgery is the odontological specialty dedicated to the diagnosis, prevention and, at times, treatment of oral pathologies. It treats disorders of the buccal cavity, the cranio-maxillofacial skeleton, the salivary glands and the neck, with surgical techniques. Oral Surgery includes surgical interventions carried out in the mouth. Generally they are simple procedures that can be performed under local anaesthetic at the dental surgery. EXTRACTION OF WISDOM TEETH The wisdom teeth, also called third molars, tend to appear in the mouths of young adults. When the buccal cavity is too small to fit them they can be retained and may damage the neighbouring molar. When the extraction of the third molar is necessary, a systematic surgical plan is carried out. A pre-surgical orthopantomograph is prescribed, where the professional observes the specific position of the tooth and plans the most appropriate type of instruments, technique and access. The surgical extraction of the wisdom tooth consists in removing the Gingival tissue, to gently separate the tissue between the tooth and the bone, remove the tooth and suture the opening. To ensure the success of the surgical intervention, it is vitally important to follow the guidelines described in our sections.
